مستخلص: This study investigated the degree to which at-risk, urban, African American high school students' coping strategies and grade point average (GPA) would predict attendance. Data were collected from 100 high school freshmen using the Adolescent Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences. Students' GPAs were identified through school records. Results indicated that students' academic performance and coping strategies significantly predicted a significant degree of the variance in attendance. Students who had lower GPAs, who used avoidance less often as a means of coping, and who used social support more often as a means of coping had higher levels of absenteeism. Students who attended school more frequently tended to have high cumulative GPAs, report the use of avoidance as a means of stress reduction, and use social support more often than did those who did not.
