مستخلص: This article is the first in a two-part series on international resources on the Net. This article covers Internet demographic trends and resources that help users participate in the increasingly global Internet. The Internet has made the world smaller and more interconnected. English is no longer the primary language of Internet users and has not been for about 5 years, as of 2004. Today, while English is still the dominant single language, with almost 36 percent of the world's Internet population having English as their country's national language, non-English speakers represent more than 62 percent of cybercitizens. Of the search engines, Google has gone the farthest in globalizing its service. Its Language Tools option provides for searching in any of 35 languages. Meanwhile, AltaVista allows users to search worldwide or only in the U.S. and to see results in any language. Other search engines have less comprehensive approaches to language and local content. Individuals from global cultures are encountered regularly on the Net. Whether it is to understand the news, to prepare people for travel, to research investments, or to get families ready to host international visitors, people can increasingly turn to the Internet for information and insights.
