مستخلص: It seems that a satisfactory system for the production of pathogen-inactivated platelet concentrates is now available. All studies have reported that pathogen-inactivated platelet concentrates are safe, although this still needs further confirmation. An important advantage of photochemical treatment is that proliferation of bacteria is prevented, which may prolong the storage time of platelet concentrates. Most experts feel that further data are required, particularly concerning the long-term use of these concentrates in patients who need multiple platelet transfusions. The inactivation of bacteria is generally accepted as a main advantage, but methods to routinely test for bacterial contamination are emerging or already in use.
