Witches' brooms disease, common on both coniferous and broadleaved trees, is characterized by the production of a dense mass of short shoots from a single infected axillary bud. The disease is often highly localized, with the branch carrying the infection showing no adverse symptoms distal to the broom. In Great Britain, Betula pubescens is frequently infected by Taphrina betulina, resulting in profuse development of axillary shoots from the infected bud. This article reports on some aspects of the histology and histochemistry of brooms formed on B. pubescens infected by T. betulina. |
