مستخلص: Current vehicles are increasingly depending on Electronic Control Units (ECUs) that control virtually every system of the vehicle. To enable more advanced features automotive embedded systems are opening to external world which raises security concerns. Thanks to its bandwidth, payload size and openness, Ethernet is a candidate technology for future in-vehicle architectures. Based on this notion we suggest exploiting properties of Ethernet/IP to secure in-vehicle communications. This paper presents our approach to securing Controller Area Network (CAN) communication by encapsulating CAN-frames into UDP datagrams and applying security mechanisms known from TCP/IP. The goal was to design an efficient solution that meets requirements for latency without requiring high amounts of processing power and provides authenticity and integrity of control signals. For our needs we chose IPSec/AH protocol that fulfils the identified security requirements. Validation of the proposed solution using simulation in OMNeT++ simulation environment has been carried out. The results of the simulation show that transmission of encapsulated and secured CAN-frames across Ethernet backbone does not introduce significant delays and could be suitable even for real-time traffic.
