مستخلص: Based upon three selected specimens, the early Late Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian: Bashkirian: Namurian B: late Marsdenian) Lithomantis varius Brauckmann, 1985 (Insecta: Palaeodictyoptera: Lithomantidae) from the important Konservat-Lagerstaette Hagen-Vorhalle (Germany) is reconstructed. It is mainly characterized by (i) a small head with a short and narrow sucking beak and inconspicuous maxillipalpi, (ii) a narrow prothorax with a pair of subcircular prothoracic winglets, (iii) non-overlapping mesothoracic and metathoracic wings, (iv) three crescent-shaped coloured bands on each mesothoracic and metathoracic wing and, additionally, a lot of irregularly distributed coloured spots close to the base of the wings, (v) a relatively short abdomen with 11 rather broad segments, each of them with pleural-like lateral prolongations, and (vi) a pair of extremely long and delicately setaceous cerci with a great number of segments. In particular in the presence of a beak and the very long cerci, our reconstruction of Lithomantis varius differs markedly from earlier interpretations, mainly based upon Handlirsch (1925), of the closely related type species of the genus, Lithomantis carbonarius H. Woodward, 1876 from stratigraphically younger Westphalian strata of Scotland. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
