This article focuses on a study that reviews ERCP in a small unit. ERCP is increasingly performed not only in large centres but also in smaller units. ERCP reduces the need for surgery considerably, thus making it a cost effective procedure. A cannulation success rate of 87% and an overall morbidity rate of 10% is in-line with larger units. There were no instances of either cholangitis or significant bleeding. This review demonstrates that a small unit with expertise concentrated in one endoscopist can provide a local service on a par with larger centres. |
