مستخلص: Objective: To determine the prevalence of arterial hyperoxia in adult intensive care unit (ICU) patients receiving supplemental oxygen therapy. Methods: Cross-sectional, multicenter study conducted in 3 open medical-surgical ICUs (1 private, 2 public) in São Paulo, Brazil. Patients were eligible for inclusion if they were = 18 y/o, were receiving supplemental oxygen and did not undergo ECMO. Peripheral oxyhemoglobin saturations (SpO2), type of ventilatory support and fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) were recorded three times a day for five days. Hyperoxia was defined as SpO2 =96%. Results: In total, 522 measurements were performed. Invasive mechanical ventilation (MV) (53.6%), nasal canula (29.3%), high-flow nasal canula (HFNC) (6.7%) and noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIV) (6.1%) were the most frequent types of oxygen therapy. Median (IQR) SpO2 was 96 (95-98)%. Median FiO2 in patients under MV was 30 (25-40)% and in HFNC 50 (40-70)%. The overall prevalence of hyperoxia was 64%. Prevalence of hyperoxia was more frequently observed in patients receiving oxygen through tracheal nebulization [72.2% (13/18)], MV [69.6% (195/280)], nasal canula [60.1% (92/153)] and NIV [59.4% (19/32)] than in HFNC [37.1% (13/35)]. Conclusion: The prevalence of hyperoxia was high in our heterogeneous sample of ICU patients receiving supplemental oxygen therapy. Therefore, there is a window of opportunity for a quality improvement program to reduce exposure to a potentially detrimental effect of hyperoxia and its associated costs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
