مستخلص: Teamwork is the concept of people working together cooperatively. Industrial organisations are apparently very conscious of the need to teamwork; this is not the case of the Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs). The present study attempts to explore team effectiveness in the context of HEIs in South India. The study adopted a Multi-stage Sampling, with a selection process done in four phases and took a mixed method approach. The first phase, involved the selection of an HEI (College/University Department) from each of the Universities - Kerala, MG & Calicut, using the lottery method from each region - North, Central and South. Having selected the college/institution, a list of the various departments under the two disciplines - arts and sciences - was compiled during the second phase. From the sampling frame compiled, a department representing each of the disciplines was randomly selected and the entire teaching staff was interviewed for the purpose of eliciting data. A total of 164 teachers were covered as a part of the study. The framework proposed by Udai Pareek (2002) describes Team Effectiveness along two dimensions-empowerment (task-specific strategies and processes) and functioning (the social experience), each of which having several sub-dimensions. Team Empowerment encompassed four subdimensions - task clarity, autonomy, support, and accountability, while Team Functioning was measured along three dimensions - cohesion, confrontation, and collaboration. It was found that subdimensions - task clarity, support, accountability, cohesion, confrontation and collaboration were found to vary across the type of institutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
