Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed al-Attar is a well known scholar, a big figure, an intellectual, a literary person who has command in both prose and poetry, the jurist, fundamentalist, grammarian, linguistic, mathematician, astronomer, reformer, voyager, pious, brilliant, Sheikh of the Sheikhs of Al-Azhar, the renovator, the encyclopedic, and the sole of his time. ولادته: مترجَمنا هو العالم، الحبر، الفهّامة، الأديب، الأريب، النّحرير، الناثر، الشاعر، المترسّل، الفقيه، المحدِّث، الأصولي، النحوي، اللغوي، المنطقي، الرياضي، الفلكي، المصلح، الرحّالة، اللوذعي، الألمعي، شيخ شيوخ الأزهر الشريف، المجدّد، الموسوعي، وحيد عصره، فريد دهره، الحائز قصب السبق الشيخ حسن بن محمد العطّار. ولد مترجَمنا في الثلث الأخير من القرنين الثاني عشر الهجري، والثامن عشر الميلادي سنة 1180 ه/ 1766 م( بالقاهرة))). وقد اعتبر بعضهم أن تاريخ ولادته في نيف وثمانين ومائة ( وألف)))، ومنهم من قال سنة ثنتين وثمانين ومائة وألف))). فيما ذهب فريق ثالث إلى اعتبار سنة تسعين ومائة وألف هو تاريخ ولادة الشيخ.))). لكننا نرجح أن التاريخ الحقيقي لولادة مترجَمنا هو ما أوردناه أو ،ًال نظرًا لتواتر الروايات وإجماع علماء التراجم على ذلك.
