مستخلص: The purpose of this study was to develop an inventory for measuring heritage language motivational orientations and to explore the similarities and differences in the motivational profiles of subgroups of secondary school students of Mandarin Chinese as a heritage language in Central Java, Indonesia. The development of inventory is based on the interviews, classroom observations and theories of motivation for learning heritage languages. Nine experts were invited to review the inventory. The Indonesian-Chinese bilingual version of Heritage Language Motivation Inventory (HLMI) contains 41 items. The motivation of 310 learners of Chinese in Indonesia was examined through a questionnaire conducted by stratified-cluster proportional sampling in 2 junior high schools and 1 senior high school. One hundred seventieth four valid responses were returned. The results of factor analysis show that this inventory includes 6 types of motivational orientations: learning situational, heritage-related, expectational, affective, integrative, and instrumental. Internal consistency was .85 in total and ranged from .695~.884 among the factors. The results showed that the variables of gender, educational stage, family language background, and ethnolinguistic background (home "dialects") were related to motivational orientations for learning Chinese as a heritage language. The findings provide insights into how heritage language learners' individual differences relate to Mandarin Chinese learning motivation, which also yields pedagogical implications as well as suggestions for communitybased heritage language maintenance.
