مستخلص: In this study, we propose a structural equation model that explores support mechanisms for tourism development in the San Miguel de Napurak and Shaime Shuar indigenous communities, located in the province of Zamora-Chinchipe in the southern Amazon of Ecuador. The contribution of this research is to study a potential tourist community before tourism planning and development processes within an emerging economy. The model consists of four constructs and five hypothetical relations, which were subjected to a test using the ADANCO software--starting with the data compiled in the questionnaires. The results demonstrate that the general knowledge of tourism has a significant relationship with the perceived positive tourism impacts, and these have a strong influence on how support fosters the development of tourism. The hypothesis suggesting that there is a positive relationship between general knowledge of tourism and support for tourism development is ruled out.
