مستخلص: This article addresses the causes of weakness and insufficient knowledge in relation to historiography of some types of the decorative and applied arts what can be shown from the example of ceiling lightning appliances. Bibliography on the lightning appliances as a work of art before the Electrification Epoch is truly scant. There are separate books in world literature devoted to the ceiling lamps, however, they are rather descriptive, and do not have patterns of historical development in them. The author introduced a large amount of special literature into scientific circulation. Ceiling lightning appliances, as a part of the interiors, are hard to see in the public places. Moreover, they are unreachable for the researchers in the private households, including private collections. Apart from that, the reason behind insufficient knowledge on what is considered to be the main part of the interior, was an ideology demanding the viewer to see the lamps of this type only as a light source. In the lightning fittings fashionable trends and innovations of the epochs have left their marks for sure, yet, historians tend to pay the lightnings the lowest attention among the others decorative objects, considering them to be mainly only a light source and not a specific work of art. At last, large sizes, complex devises, and parts replacements – all of this above prevented the creation of the coherent descriptions and drawings, while the other types of arts and crafts developed their own standards of detailed reproduction and scientific description. This article presents a typology of books on the chandeliers that can be helpful in order to establish what exactly at the moment was preventing us from the sufficient study on the chandeliers. The historical and cultural reasons on the demand for cataloging and description of the ceiling lightning appliances are traced. Finally, the correlation between the standard scientific and amateur description of the subject, the reason behind the stability of the second, and the practical conditions for changes in current situation in historiography are examined. The author concludes that this topic is poorly understood, and the basis of available publications consists of the catalog. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
