مستخلص: Geoffrey Chaucer's biographers have typically portrayed themselves as deeply disturbed by the accusation of "raptus" lodged by Cecily Chaumpaigne against Chaucer in 1381. However, as I argue in this paper, such critics have also been eager to exploit and capitalize upon the titillating and erotic possibilities of that biographical detail. From William Godwin's Life of Geoffrey Chaucer (1804) until almost the present day, Chaucerian biographers have rendered the medieval poet less "tedious" and enhanced his reputation by constructing fictional stories of the different women for whom the poet supposedly lusted. Although Cecily Chaumpaigne was a historical figure, I argue, she has been treated by scholars in a manner quite similar to the mythical "courtly lady lover" created by Chaucer's Victorian readers. Both women--one real, one not--were deployed by Chaucer's critics to titillate the reading audience and amplify the poet's masculinity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
