| Abstract (English): |
This article analyses the practices of royal financing of academic institutions of science by focusing on the example of the Royal Academy of Sciences, the first institution to offer scholars a status remunerated by a pension for scientific research. The financing of the Academy has not be systematically studied, except for the period from 1666 to 1715, because of the wide dispersion of sources. This study reconstructs the financial conditions of the Academy in the eighteenth century. It documents not only the efforts made by its members to secure sustainable financing, but also the contributions of certain members to the increase in the budget. The financial stability acquired under the Old Regime made possible argument justifying public investment to scientific activities relevant to public finance within the Revolutionary context. Cet article analyse les modalités des pratiques du financement royal des institutions académiques des sciences, en s'attachant au cas de l'Académie royale des sciences, première institution ayant offert aux savants un statut rémunéré par une pension pour la recherche scientifique. Les finances de l'Académie n'ont pas été systématiquement étudiées, excepté pour la période allant de 1666 à 1715, cela en raison de la grande dispersion des sources. Notre étude se propose de reconstituer les états financiers de l'Académie au XVIIIe siècle. Elle constate non seulement les tentatives de négociation par ses membres d'un financement durable, mais également les contributions participatives de certains de ses membres à l'accroissement de son budget. La stabilisation acquise sous l'Ancien Régime rendit possible une argumentation approfondie sur les activités scientifiques comme objet pertinent du financement public dans le contexte révolutionnaire.
