Appadurai and Alexander argue that this opaqueness leads to the widespread belief that technological failures are a result of user error, personalizing the failure and shifting blame away from the promise-maker. Contributing to an emerging field of failure studies ([1]; [2]; [4]; [5]), the authors examine the commodification of failure within the linked worlds of Silicon Valley and Wall Street.
