مستخلص: Computer languages, code, are the languages of the Information Age; digital technology entirely depends on these languages for functionality. Without computer languages the contrivances that have most profoundly altered our lives of late would be null, literally non-existent. Although considered artificial languages, computer languages constitute a body of thus far unacknowledged social and cultural import. Due to their instrumental role in digital technology increasingly permeating our lives and reaching the masses consistently and concurrently, computer languages are likely to have a reverberating effect Literacy, manifesting the gate to knowledge, the passing of which requires ability and access, has traditionally been, and continues to be, a male privilege--a circumstance that through the ages has proven adverse for women. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the languages of digital technology are practiced by, based on education, a scribal elite, the members of which are as unique today as the scribes of the ancient world once were. The languages of technology represent access to power, the volatile essence of which is rarely willingly diffused by sharing it. Interestingly, a surge in literacy has historically foreshadowed a weakening of women's social status. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
