مستخلص: Carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHAp) was bone composition as it contains 3-8wt.% carbonate. It has significantly higher osteoconductivity compared to other calcium phosphates-bioceramics and replaces to bone similar to autograft. However there is challenge to prepare CHAp due to carbonate loss during heat-treatment or sintering which is always used to prepare ceramic materials. In this study, the CHAp was synthesized at low temperature of 120°C thought phase transformation of calcite in 1 mol/L Na2HPO4 solution. The calcite was initially prepared by sol-gel citrate hydrothermal using calcium nitrate complexes in NaOH at different concentrations. The results showed that different calcium compounds of calcite and calcium hydroxide formed when NaOH concentration varied 2 to 3 mol/L. The calcite after immersed in Na2HPO4 converted to CHAp based on the dissolution-precipitation reaction. The CHA structure was made of nanosize crystals, needle-like shape ranging from 48-63 nm in length and 8-10 nm in width. This nanostructure material could facilitate the initial bone integration. Therefore, this synthesis approach could be pave the way for the preparation of bone substitute material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
