Despite the recognised need for education and training in laboratory animal science (LAS) and ethics in Africa, access to such opportunities has historically been limited. To address this, the Pan-African Network for Laboratory Animal Science and Ethics (PAN-LASE) was established to pioneer a support network for the development of education and training in LAS and ethics across the African continent. In the 4.5 years since the establishment of PAN-LASE, 3635 individuals from 28 African countries have participated in our educational activities. Returning to their home institutions, they have both established and strengthened institutional and regional hubs of knowledge and competence across the continent. Additionally, PAN-LASE supported the development of guidelines for establishment of institutional Animal Ethics Committees, a critical step in the implementation of ethical review processes across the continent, and in enhancing animal welfare and scientific research standards. Key challenges and opportunities for PAN-LASE going forward include the formalisation of the network; the sustainability of education and training programmes; implementation of effective hub-and-spoke models of educational provision; strengthening governance frameworks at institutional, national and regional levels; and the availability of Africa-centric open access educational resources. Our activities are enhancing animal welfare and the quality of animal research undertaken across Africa, enabling African researchers to undertake world-leading research to offer solutions to the challenges facing the continent. The challenges, successes and the lessons learnt from PAN-LASE's journey are applicable to other low- and middle-income countries across the world seeking to enhance animal welfare, research ethics and ethical review in their own country or region. A pesar de la reconocida necesidad de educación y formación (E&T, por sus siglas en inglés) en la ciencia con animales de laboratorio (LAS, por sus siglas en inglés) y ética en África, el acceso a estas oportunidades ha sido históricamente limitado. Para resolver esta situación, se creó la Red Panafricana para la Ciencia y la Ética de los Animales de Laboratorio (PAN-LASE, por sus siglas en inglés) con el fin de crear una red de respaldo para el desarrollo de la educación y la formación en la ciencia y ética con animales de laboratorio en todo el continente africano. En los 4 años y medio transcurridos desde la creación de PAN-LASE, 3635 personas de 28 países africanos han participado en nuestras actividades de formación. Al regresar a sus instituciones de origen, han establecido y fortalecido centros institucionales y regionales de conocimiento y competencia en todo el continente. Asimismo, PAN-LASE respaldó la creación de directrices para el establecimiento de Comités de Ética Animal institucionales, un paso fundamental en la implementación de procesos de revisión ética en todo el continente, y en la mejora del bienestar animal y de los estándares de investigación científica. Malgré le besoin reconnu d'éducation et de formation (E&F) en science des animaux de laboratoire (SAL.) et en éthique en Afrique, l'accès à de telles opportunités s'est toujours avéré limité. Lle réseau panafricain pour la science et l'éthique des animaux de laboratoire (PAN-LASE) a été créé pour y remédier en établissant un réseau de soutien pour le développement de l'E&F aux SAL et de l'éthique à travers le continent africain. Au cours des 4 années et demie écoulées depuis la création du PAN-LASE, 3 635 personnes issues de 28 pays africains ont participé à nos activités éducatives. À leur retour dans leurs institutions d'origine, elles ont à la fois établi et renforcé des centres institutionnels et régionaux de connaissances et de compétences à travers le continent. Le PAN-LASE a en outre appuyé l'élaboration de lignes directrices pour l'établissement de comités institutionnels d'éthique animale, une étape critique de la mise en œuvre des processus d'examen éthique à travers le continent, et de l'amélioration du bien-être des animaux et des normes de recherche scientifique. Obgleich der Bedarf an Aus- und Weiterbildung (E&T) in den Bereichen Versuchstierkunde (LAS) und -ethik in Afrika unbestritten ist, war der Zugang zu solchen Möglichkeiten in der Vergangenheit begrenzt. Um dies zu ändern, wurde das Pan-African Network for Laboratory Animal Science and Ethics (PAN-LASE) als Unterstützungsnetzwerk für die Entwicklung von E&T in LAS und Ethik auf dem gesamten afrikanischen Kontinent gegründet. In den viereinhalb Jahren seit der Gründung von PAN-LASE haben 3.635 Personen aus 28 afrikanischen Ländern an unseren Bildungsaktivitäten teilgenommen. Nach ihrer Rückkehr in ihre Heimateinrichtungen haben sie auf dem gesamten Kontinent institutionelle und regionale Wissens- und Kompetenzzentren auf- und ausgebaut. Darüber hinaus unterstützte PAN-LASE die Entwicklung von Leitlinien für die Einrichtung institutioneller Tier-Ethikausschüsse, ein entscheidender Schritt bei der Einführung ethischer Prüfverfahren auf dem gesamten Kontinent und bei der Verbesserung des Tierschutzes und der wissenschaftlichen Forschungsstandards.
