مستخلص: Aim To Evaluate Potency of Different Disinfectants on Toothbrush Contamination and to Assess its Effect on Bristle Morphology" - An Invitro Study. Materials and Methods Part 1 of study uses middle bristle halves of 160 toothbrushes which were divided into four groups based on microorganism [MO] with ten toothbrushes in each sub-group based on disinfectant. Post 4 minutes contamination of toothbrush with selected microorganism, 50 microliter sample was used to obtain colony forming units[CFU] as control. Post selective disinfection [n=20] with, D1: Hot-water, D2: 100% white-vinegar, D3: 2% Sodium-bicarbonate with saline, D4: UV, bristle-halves were removed and placed in broth and 50 micro liter sample was taken to obtain CFU. In part 2 of the study, Sixteen unused toothbrushes were taken and grouped based on disinfectants subjected and evaluated at 1,6 and 12 weeks through SEM evaluation and compared to the control sample. Results In Part 1: Reduced bacterial count seen significantly postdisinfection when compared to pre-disinfection in all groups. In Part 2: Various parameters like fraying, signs of wear, surface roughness was evaluated through SEM. UV was the best disinfectant in first 6 weeks. At 12th week UV was better followed by hot water, 2% Sodiumbicarbonate and white-vinegar. Conclusion Regular or daily disinfection of toothbrush is an important routine to be followed for daily practice which if not done properly can lead to various systemic diseases decreasing the quality of life.
