The main objective of this article is to disclose several aspects of Al-Jahiz's rationality through his explanation of the workings of the human mind, as the cognition of needs; an account that can serve as a substitute for many other abstract definitions that overshadowed the understanding of Ancient Muslim philosophers of reason. The wise man, according to Al-Jahiz, is the kind of man who knows the exact amount of his needs. Al-Jahiz maintains that the individual's need for reason is as important as a person's need for instinct to live and survive. However, it is indispensable for the human being to be equipped with doubt; not for the sake of doubt, but for the sake of knowledge. This is known in modern philosophy as methodical doubt, which prompts the researcher to scrutinize the information, check it, and prove its veracity by means of argumentation and evidence.
