مستخلص: Child-headed households have developed into a fundamental part of South African society. Millions of children have lost their parents and/or caregivers due to multiple reasons, of which the HIV/AIDS and covid 19 pandemic can be singled out as the main causes. As a result, children have been obliged to look after themselves, giving rise to a new type of family, the child-headed household. The occurrence of this type of family needs government's response in terms of care and support. Key legislation and policies in South Africa guide services to child headed households. This study endeavoured to determine the statutory services rendered by social workers to child headed households. It was anticipated that by identifying the services and the current challenges, the results of this research would be used to improve interventions to child headed households. Statutory social work services provided to child-headed households were evaluated against the existing National Guidelines for statutory services to child-headed households. These guidelines were developed by the Department of Social Development and identify norms and standards for statutory social work services rendered to child-headed households. A qualitative approach was applied. The methodology followed were mainly a desk review focusing on existing literature, policies and acts as well as casefiles files of social workers that served as case studies. Qualitative data was analysed through thematic analysis. This study revealed that there were challenges that needed to be addressed in terms of statutory social work services provided to child-headed households, focusing on standardise implementation of polices and provisions of the Children's Amendment Act, 41 of 2007, socio-economic issues, and the types of service development programmes as well as the role of the supervising adult. This study also recommends that a holistic development of social workers knowledge and skills are needed to attend to child headed households. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
