مستخلص: The intake of colostrum by newborn piglets is essential for the survival of their first days of life. In addition, the amount of colostrum intake determines the future performance of the piglets in the fattening herd, but especially of the gilts in the breeding herd. Successful selection for a high number of piglets in the litter has not only resulted in a desirable increase in the number of live-born piglets, but also an undesirable reduction in birth weight. The hyperprolific sow has typically more piglets (16, 18 or more) compared to the number of her functional teats (14 to 16). The low birth weight and weight variability of the high numbered litters, together with the insufficient number of functional teats, sometimes in combination with low colostrum production by the sow, are the causes of the high losses of piglets up to 5 days after birth, as well as of the reduced piglet performance until weaning. Recently, several studies have been published dealing with the problem of colostrum intake by piglets from high number litters or piglets with low birth weight. It is this issue that is the subject of this review. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
