Researchers from Huazhong University of Science and Technology Union Shenzhen Hospital in China have discovered that coptisine, a natural alkaloid isolated from Coptis chinensis, has significant antifungal activity against Cryptococcus neoformans. The study found that coptisine disrupts the membranes of fungal cells, leading to structural changes and triggering cell apoptosis. In addition, coptisine was shown to improve the survival of infected mice and reduce damage to their tissues.
