مستخلص: This article discusses the importance of considering both linguistic competence and second-order constraints in second language (L2) acquisition research. While generative linguistics provides a model for understanding L2 grammar, it does not guarantee success in acquiring target properties. The article argues that "second-order" constraints, such as the influence of the first language (L1) and exposure to the L2, play a primary role in explaining the partial success of L2 acquisition. The transfer-and-learnability account is used to explain the difficulties faced by English speakers acquiring Chinese imperfectives and progressives. The article concludes that future L2 research should focus on refining these secondary mechanisms to better understand the challenges of L2 acquisition. [Extracted from the article]
