The book "Intellectuals: Careers and Crises of a Figure from the Middle Ages to the Present" by Martin Kintzinger and Wolfgang Eric Wagner examines the significance and development of the concept of "intellectual" from Émile Zola's open letter "J'accuse!" to the present day. It emphasizes the normative-polemical meaning of the term and the distance from power that intellectuals often take. The book contains eleven contributions that address various aspects of the topic. The article also examines the German economist and sociologist Johann Plenge, who taught as a student of Karl Bücher in Leipzig and later worked at the University of Münster.
