مستخلص: Bulk FeS and FeS2 compounds have been synthesized via mechanochemical process with elemental iron and sulphur as source materials. The elemental powders were subjected to wet milling for 48 hrs at 500 rpm in presence of toluene and a ball-to-powder ratio of 15:1. The powders were collected at regular intervals during 48 hrs of milling at 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, and 48 hrs and subjected to X-ray diffraction studies to understand the phase evolution. The analysis reveals that FeS phase starts forming at 6 hrs and remains until 42 hrs along with traces of unreacted sulphur. For 48 hrs of milling, amorphization was noticed and when subjected to annealing, formation of polycrystalline FeS2 is observed. Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of FeS2 in 48 hrs milled samples and the optical band gap values obtained were ~2.03eV and ~1.28eV for FeS and FeS2 respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
