"Space to Breathe" is a review of Christina Sharpe's book, "Ordinary Notes," which delves into the lasting effects of slavery and historical trauma on the Black community. The book challenges the idea that Black people must either be pessimistic or optimistic, instead focusing on the structural realities of anti-Blackness while also celebrating the resilience and richness of Black social life. Sharpe's unique approach includes 248 notes on Black life, interspersed with personal reflections, conversations with other writers, and photographs. The use of black censor bars throughout the text serves to highlight the pervasiveness of racial violence, while also creating space for healing and rejuvenation. Similarly, "Ordinary Notes" by Saidiya Hartman explores racial violence, media representation, and the importance of breath and healing in the face of trauma. The book employs the technique of censoring names to underscore the widespread nature of racial violence and the dehumanization of its victims. It also critiques the media's tendency to sensationalize and glorify white male perpetrators of violence, while disregarding the suffering of the victims.
