Astronomers are eager to observe the first generation of stars, known as population III stars, which were massive and made exclusively of hydrogen and helium. These stars played a crucial role in the early universe, creating the chemical elements necessary for the formation of galaxies, planets, and life. While direct observation of population III stars is challenging, astronomers are using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to search for indirect evidence, such as the glow of gas clouds illuminated by the intense radiation of these stars. Other methods, such as studying the luminous flares emitted when population III stars are torn apart by black holes, are also being explored. Additionally, recent studies suggest that some population III stars may have survived and could be found closer to our own galaxy. [Extracted from the article] |
