مستخلص: The increasing number of peddlers, street vendors, and modular stalls due to the demand of the market for goods distribution supported by greater technology for mobility creates a need for portable lighting to allow selling goods in the evening. The objective of this study is to design a multipurpose portable lamp to meet the need of those peddlers and street vendors. The design concept for the lamp includes simplicity design for ease of manufacture and use, multifunction, and eco-friendly as a part of a sustainable energy ecosystem. The design process to achieve the objective was started by synthesizing the simple design principles by simplifying the features of the lamp while increasing its multifunctionality by participatory design involving the potential users, followed by an iterative design process to deal with design limitations such as time and material, and finalized by design evaluation involving a design team consists of researchers from various background with a collaborative learning process. In the first stage, there were two prototypes developed and then tested by the potential users. They were interviewed and given questionnaires to find their opinion about the lamp prototypes. There were several findings that encouraged the re-design of the lamp in the third prototype, with the intention to optimize the energy efficiency of the lamp, its multifunctionality, as well as ease to use as the new design is lighter and more comfortable to grip and hold. The new design is also tailor-made to be charged by renewable energy sources such as solar-powered telescopic lamps or booths with solar cells and wind turbines as electrical power sources.
