This article focuses on the history of violence in France. In France, violence is romanticized as it is in many cultures, but it is also intellectualized as a legitimate manifestation of philosophical belief. France and Paris have had riots many times before, including the Parisian student revolts of 1229, freeing the young scholars from papal law. The author comments on Michel Houellebecq's new book "The Possibility of an Island," in which the Sartrian fusion of violence and art lives on. |
