This article reports on the move of the U.S. Department of Defense to consider more powerful rocket options because the National Reconnaissance Office has a payload that would not fit with the lift provided by the rocket launchers of the U.S. Air Force. Performance for the Boeing Delta IV's RS-68 requires a boost to ensure that fleet is able to lift the heaviest national security payloads. By 2020, NASA is planning to use the RS-68 as the engine for the Ares V launch vehicle, which will boost supplies to the Moon. |
