The article deals with the creation of the Victorian memorial window. In the Middle Ages, windows were frequently installed as a result of pious gifts or legacies. By the seventh century, the function of stained glass had been mainly supplanted by more secular concerns, frequently genealogical in character and pushed by a growth of historical awareness. The author emphasizes the need to recognize memorial windows as a reflection of a society still hierarchal, with ideals and preoccupations. A number of memorial glass work came into existence, fascinating in the application of metaphor and symbolism to the realities of life and death. |
