The article discusses Protestant theological debates in early modern England about the role of angels in God's relations with human beings, in particular how they interceded in human affairs and whether they ever made themselves visible. The ambivalence of English Reformation theologians regarding these issues, amid efforts to suppress what they regarded as Catholic superstitions and idolatry, is discussed, with reference to angles in the Bible, historical accounts of angelic apparitions, and developments in scientific and philosophical understandings of optical phenomena. |
