مستخلص: A mature approach to exploiting the secondary analysis of social science data for applied policy research and basic science will require attention to the strategies that social scientists use in approaching such problems. Particular attention needs to be paid to the background and training of such users, since it will affect their capacity to deal with problems encountered in many types of data retrieval. Attention to their familiarity with measurement problems and the lessons of computer science is vital. At the same time effective use of archival data requires the institutionalization of capacities to meet legitimate demands for data from social science and the development of standards for documentation, the assembly of material on particular datasets, and the appropriate referencing of data to the context in which they are collected. An outline of an ideal data retrieval system is sketched, and some practical suggestions for archivists and data librarians on steps to reach that objective are outlined in the conclusion.
