مستخلص: This study was designed to evaluate the working of School Management Councils (SMCs) in Government Secondary Schools in Pakistan. The study was descriptive in nature and a survey was conducted for data collection. The population of the study consisted of Heads of Government secondary schools, Secondary School Teachers and Community representatives. A convenient random sample was drawn. Out of these schools 16 heads, 48 teachers and 48 community representatives of SMCs were randomly selected. Questionnaires for the heads, teachers and community representatives were prepared to investigate the working of school management councils. The collected data was analysed by calculating the percentage. The study indicated that the teachers' strength, the physical facilities of the schools, interaction between the teachers and parents, involvement in the developmental activities of the schools, contribution in the purchases of the schools and convening different major events through communication participation were improved. On the other hand, the teachers' presence and student dropout rates were not improved under this system. The study recommended that SMCs may further be empowered to resolve the problems of students and teachers at the institutional level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
