The terms road and journey have been the main theme of many narratives from epics to films throughout human history. The concept of "hitting the road" can entail things such as conquering land or reuniting with a long lost lover in genres extensive as the novel in literature, and the western in cinema. The road movie is a distinct genre in American cinema, yet the tendency goes beyond trying to reach a certain destination. Movies in this genre began proliferating in the 1960s, as a direct response to cultural developments, wherein members of the American society felt alienated by the American dream and were in the search for new values. In this context, the concepts of road and journey were representative of the counter culture developing at the time. The search inherent in the road movie is a revolt against the dominant culture and this is also reflected in the filmic language and production practices. In this study, the film Easy Rider (1969) which was directed by Dennis Hopper is examined in the context of the road movie genre. The thematic and iconographic conventions that define the genre are examined in relation to the cultural and social atmosphere prevalent at the time. Easy Rider can be characterized as one of the first films to be liberated in terms of cinematographic narration and is significant in that it is an independent film. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |

Yol ve yolculuk kavramları, insanlık tarihi boyunca, destandan filme kadar birçok anlatının ana teması olmuştur. Yazın alanında roman, sinemada western gibi türlerde, yola çıkma eylemi, bir toprağı fethetmek, sevgilisine kavuşmak gibi belli bir amaca yöneliktir. Amerikan sinemasının türleri arasında yer alan yol filmleri ise, belirli bir hedefe ulaşmanın dışında bir yönelim gösterir. Türe özgü filmler, 1960'lı yıllarda Amerikan rüyasına yabancılaşan, yeni değerler arayan kesimin sinemadaki yansıması olarak tanımlanabilir. Bu bağlamda, yol ve yolculuk kavramları, dönemin karşı kültürünü temsil eden karakterlerle farklı anlamlar yüklenir. Yol filmlerindeki arayış ve egemen kültüre başkaldırı, yapım pratiklerini ve sinemasal anlatımı belirlemek için de bir araç olur. Bu çalışmada, yol filmlerinin temel anlatı formlarını içeren Dennis Hopper'in yönettiği Easy Rider (1969) filmi örneğinde, sinemada yol ve yolculuk kavramlarının kapsamı ele alınmıştır. Yol filmlerinin, bir tür olarak sınırlarını belirleyen özellikler, dönemin kültürel, toplumsal atmosferinin sinemasal anlatıma etkileri, tematik ve ikonografik açıdan incelenmiştir.
