مستخلص: Respiratory symptoms, especially breathlessness, negatively affect quality of life in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Other than during exacerbations, symptoms may be constant with little changes in nature or intensity during the course of the day, from one week to another, or throughout the year. Variations over time in respiratory symptoms have recently been investigated in large cross-sectional studies. These studies have demonstrated that a majority of COPD patients experience daily or weekly fluctuations in the nature or strength of their symptoms. Variability of symptoms showed large differences among countries or regions, possibly related to climatic or cultural factors. During the day, symptoms prevail mainly in the morning, with a critical impact on morning activities. It is not known whether the degree of variability of respiratory symptoms for a given patient is a constant feature associated with a specific phenotype as longitudinal studies have not yet been performed.
