This study was designed to identify the effect on patient skin dose of being covered with a towel, sheet or hospital gown. Surface-dose readings were measured with thermoluminescent dosimeters covered by these materials. Surface doses were measured on a phantom and compared with surface doses to uncovered radiation fields. We found a substantial surface dose increase as the thickness of the covering materials increased. The results suggest that protocols for skin covering during treatment should be taken into consideration because of the potential for an increase in the skin dose and associated risk of skin toxicity.
