مستخلص: Fugitive emissions from landfills surface are an important source of carbon dioxide and methane released to the atmosphere and affecting to the greenhouse effect. Quantifying those emissions can provide valuable information in environmental terms and in order to the appropriate landfill management. Several measurement methods as well as prediction models for determine these types of emissions can be found in the bibliography. In this study a two step process, as described on the Guidance on monitoring landfill gas surface emissions (EA 2010), was followed in order to obtain the total amount of the surface emissions of two landfill sites in Spain. The first step consists on a walkover survey in which the gas concentration close to the surface is monitored. The information obtained is used to choose the sample points for the second step, the flux box study. A flux box is a dispositive with a known volume that allows to accumulate and to quantify emanating emissions from a given area over time. Some preliminary results show significant differences between the two landfills that can be related to the active extraction and use of the gas and the type of seal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
