مستخلص: This article traces the history of one genre of commemoration, the U.S. Medal of Honor, from its inception in 1861, early in the Civil War, to the present. We begin by locating the Medal of Honor in relation to other genres that memorialize wartime military service. We then show how past research on genres of commemoration provides analytic tools that can allow us to understand the historical development of the Medal of Honor. The central sections of this article identify the main elements of the Medal of Honor as a genre: how the recipients are selected and by whom, the audiences for the award, and the ways in which the award ceremony, the privileges recipients enjoy over their lifetimes, and the language of the citations work to define ideals of military honor and bravery. We are concerned with exploring how the Medal citations and ceremonies are structured to speak to various audiences and with tracing how the criteria for awarding the Medal and its effect on different audiences have changed over time. We code the criteria for awarding the Medal and find a decisive change during the Vietnam War. We conclude by offering a provisional explanation for that change and speculate on how post-Vietnam narratives of honor affect the ways in which the United States is able to elicit support from soldiers and civilians for subsequent wars.
