مستخلص: Previous role granted wholesale markets - food security and lower prices was transferred supermarket cash and carry stores. The new role of institutions recognized wholesale is a social and employment: provide places for unskilled labor in the food supply chain and retail activities. Statistics show that in 2001 there were 78 wholesale markets located on a total area of 2175 hectares and a building area of 722 ha in 12 EU countries, annual business figure was 27,000 million euros. These markets are visited daily by over 178,560 people, and the number of operators is 10.768 permanent and 10,000 producers. Another argument presented in the figures, the importance of wholesale markets is to specify the quantities of agricultural products traded: over 16.7 million tonnes of which 13.0 million tons of fruits and vegetables, 840 million tonnes fish and meat.
