A brief outline of the development of recorder playing involving several players for each part is followed by an appreciation of the merits of the pioneer Rudolf Barthel at the music school “Paul Hindemith” in Berlin Neukölln. His successor, Michael Kubik describes Barthel’s rehearsal technique, his wealth of experience and the methods he developed to make the music of a recorder orchestra sound more appealing and particularly achieving great dynamic distinctions with ingenious instrumentation. Suitable instruments each with several players is discussed as is the necessity of thorough training of the players involved. Brilliant effects can be achieved, in particular by the formation of various registers (81, 4’, 2’, analogous to the organ registers) even in 3-6 part scores. Suggestions are made as to how this can be imparted to the players in the orchestra with the use of short symbols. The author advocates keeping the high range of soprano recorders with several players per part instead of leaving them out as is sometimes the case today. Suggestions for part writing are given for composers, the (sound) notation for an extensive recorder orchestra score is also illustrated. Cooperation with string orchestra, plucked string orchestra and guitar ensemble is suggested as another alternative to make concerts more entertaining.
