مستخلص: This article considers the increasing use by police of voluntary interviews of suspects. While voluntary interviews may be more efficient for the police, and less distressing for individuals, than arrests and questioning in custody, they do not provide the full range of usual protections for suspects. The risks posed by voluntary interviews to the suspect's welfare and to due process are compounded by an inconsistent approach to their application. This article calls for detailed guidance on voluntary interviews to be adopted by all police forces, to include limits on the length and number of interviews for each suspect within a defined period and a standardised recording system. It also recommends that legal advice should be mandatory for all young and vulnerable suspects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
