مستخلص: The etiology of odontomas is possibly the result of genetic mutations in the tooth germ, and ameloblastic fibro-odontomas (AFOs) are currently considered immature stages of odontomas. A systematic review of proteins immunoexpressed in odontomas and AFOs was performed to clarify the pathogenesis of these lesions. A literature search was performed in the following electronic databases following the PRISMA criteria: PubMed/ MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, EMBASE, Lilacs, Cochrane Collaboration Library, and Science Direct. The research question was developed according to the population, intervention, comparison, and outcome (PICO) framework: which proteins are related to the pathogenesis of odontomas, and what is their interrelationship with AFOs? Thirty articles were selected for this systematic review totaling 355 cases of odontomas and 43 cases of AFO. Immunoexpression of proteins involved in cell differentiation and proteins involved in histodifferentiation and enamel formation were higher in compound odontomas. The immunoexpression of enamel matrix proteins differs between different stages of odontogenesis and odontomas with their persistence being related to the development of these tumors. Some genetic pathways may be involved in tumor formation, like the Wnt/beta-catenin and TGF-ß/BMP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
