The current environmental crisis is a major challenge within the framework of an urban-industrial capitalist society, with production modes not compatible with the environment. A strategy used to measure the sustainability of the planet is the Ecological Footprint, which assesses the pressure of human consumption on natural resources and verifies that they are within their ecological capacity. Through a methodology of qualitative-descriptive approach, we applied a questionnaire containing 15 objective questions and 04 subjective questions to understand the differences and contributions of the Ecological Footprint of students of the 3rd year of high school, living in the field and in the city, of a school in the state of Bahia. For categorization and discussion, we made use of content analysis, calculated their individual ecological footprints and classified them according to the local dimension of residence and the categories: food, consumption and waste. The results showed that the life styles of students exceed the biocapacity of planet Earth, being necessary to maintain them between two and three planets. We conclude that the Ecological Footprint methodology is a didactic-pedagogical resource that instigates the formation of sustainable ecological attitudes, one of the objectives reaffirmed by Environmental Education. A crise ambiental atual configura um grande desafio no marco de uma sociedade capitalista urbano-industrial, com modos de produção não compatíveis com o meio ambiente. Uma estratégia utilizada para mensurar a sustentabilidade do planeta é a Pegada Ecológica, que avalia a pressão do consumo humano sobre os recursos naturais e verifica se estes estão dentro da sua capacidade ecológica. Por meio de uma metodologia de abordagem qualitativa-descritiva, aplicamos um questionário contendo 15 questões objetivas e 04 questões subjetivas para compreender as diferenças e contribuições da Pegada Ecológica de estudantes do 3o ano do Ensino Médio, residentes no campo e na cidade, de uma escola do estado da Bahia. Para a categorização e discussão, fizemos uso da análise de conteúdo, calculamos as suas pegadas ecológicas individuais e as classificamos conforme a dimensão local de residência e das categorias: alimentação, consumo e resíduos. Os resultados demonstraram que os estilos de vida dos estudantes superam a biocapacidade do planeta Terra, sendo necessários para mantê-los entre dois a três planetas. Concluímos que a metodologia da Pegada Ecológica constitui recurso didáticopedagógico que instiga a formação de atitudes ecológicas sustentáveis, um dos objetivos reafirmados pela Educação Ambiental.
