مستخلص: The article presents the author's views against the practice of emptying the contest room while performing at solo and ensemble contests. He regards the choice to empty the contest room as robbing the event of much of its significance to students. As a band director he often explains to his students that if they cannot play in front of an audience, they have no business being there. Music is not for weaklings. Playing for an audience builds confidence and character. Besides, people are social creatures, and sharing music is one of the great pleasures in life. The idea that students should perform in isolation for a judge is absurd. Contests do not exist just to rate a band or an individual. In fact, the purpose of contests is to keep bands in the schools. The more the public sees students as they perform at contests the better it is for school music programs.
