Signaling noncomprehension of the spoken messages of others was examined for youth with fragile X or Down syndrome in comparison with each other and nonverbal MA- matched typically developing children. A direction-following task was used in which some of the directions were inadequate. Both syndrome groups signaled noncomprehension less often than did the typically developing children. The ability to signal noncomprehension appropriately was related to a measure of receptive vocabulary and syntax. Preliminary analyses indicated that males with fragile X syndrome signaled noncomprehension less often than did their female peers, even after controlling for differences in nonverbal MA. Le signalement de l'incompréhension des messages parlés a été étudié chez des jeunes présentant le syndrome du X fragile ou le syndrome de Down. Les groupes ont été comparés entre eux ainsi qu'avec des enfants ayant un développement typique, appariés selon l'âge mental. Une situation dans laquelle des instructions devaient être suivies a été présentée, dans laquelle des instructions étaient inexactes. Les deux groupes ayant un syndrome ont signalé moins d'incompréhension que le groupe d'enfants présentant un développement typique. L'habileté à signaler l'incompréhension de façon appropriée a été liée à une mesure de la réception du vocabulaire et de la syntaxe. Les analyses préliminaires ont démontré que les garcons présentant le syndrome du X fragile ont signalé des incompréhensions moins fréquemment que leurs pairs, et ce même après avoir pris en compte les differences de l'âge mental non verbal.
