The article explores the use of the granular-media filter bed in the wastewater treatment process. The initial step for ensuring effective performance of the filter bed is to collect baseline data the day the filter goes on-line. Trending some parameters during commissioning sometimes will be the best indicator of a problem or change in performance. One of these parameters involves a complete water chemistry analysis of both the influent and effluent, particularly total suspended solids (TSS) and biological oxygen demand. At the core of filter performance are the filter media. A number of methods can be performed on filter media in order to determine possible problems or opportunities for improving performance. |
