مستخلص: Notes the brief success of tourist camps in South Dakota and America at large during the 1920's-30's. An increase in automobile ownership, coupled with the development of roads and highways during that period, caused a boom in automobile vacationing. Where initially travelers pitched tents on the side of the road, tourist camps were soon established to cater to the needs of motorists who wanted inexpensive comfort in an outdoor setting. Consisting of groups of bungalows or small cabins, tourist camp facilities could be rented for short periods of time for anywhere from one dollar to six dollars per night. Their popularity peaked in the 1930's, after which they gained a reputation for being seedy and unclean. In the 1950's chain motels wiped out the tourist camp business.
